Wrongful Termination

It’s illegal for an employer to fire you because of the color of your skin, your gender, the religion you practice, your age, your disability, your ethnicity, or where you were born. The law refers to these types of traits as “protected characteristics,” meaning employers cannot terminate you because you’re black, Muslim, or come from a different country.

However, Texas is an “at-will” state – meaning employers can fire employees at-will for a good reason, a bad reason, or no reason at all. As a result, employers have an easy time coming up with an alternative reason for the wrongful termination, which is often referred to as a “pretext.”

If you feel like you were treated differently than your coworkers because of your race, or that you were fired because of some other protected characteristic, please do something about it. Federal and Texas law prohibit that type of discrimination in the workplace.
